Happy childhood? No guarantee for good mental health!

Both positive and negative childhood experiences were found to manifest as anxiety or other mental health disorders into adulthood While it’s widely known that a difficult childhood could increase the likelihood of mental illness, a new suggested that a happy and secure childhood does not always protect a child from developing a mental illness later in life. The findings of the study were published in the journal titled ‘Current Psychology’. Conducted in partnership with the University of Canberra, the study examined how early childhood experiences relate to different developmental pathways, and how these might be associated with poor mental health. Given that both positive and negative childhood experiences were found to manifest as anxiety or other mental health disorders into adulthood, researchers believed that it is our ability to adapt – or rather not adapt – to unexpected scenarios that might be influencing mental health. In Australia, almost 50 per cent of the population will experience mental…

Study reveals that not all ‘good’ cholesterol is healthy

The good cholesterol particles are more effective in transferring cholesterol to the liver so that it can be eliminated A study led by a team of researchers has now demonstrated that not all good cholesterol is healthy. The study led by the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM) was published in the journal Metabolism, Clinical and Experimental. Although drugs that lower bad cholesterol reduces cardiovascular risk, those that raise good cholesterol have not proven effective in reducing the risk of heart disease. This paradox has called into question the relationship between good cholesterol and cardiovascular risk, and researchers are now studying the characteristics of good cholesterol particles.HDL cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein cholesterol) or good cholesterol is associated with a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease as it transports cholesterol deposited in the arteries to the liver to be eliminated. This contrasts with the so-called bad cholesterol, LDL (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol), which causes cholesterol to accumulate in the…

Positive student-teacher relationships benefit students’ long-term health

Teens who have good, supportive relationships with their teachers enjoy better health as adults Washington [US]: Teens who have good, supportive relationships with their teachers enjoy better health as adults, suggested the study published by the American Psychological Association.Friendships are important to adolescents. Perhaps, in a surprising result, the study did not find the same link between good peer relationships and students’ health in adulthood. “This research suggests that improving students’ relationships with teachers could have important, positive, and long-lasting effects beyond just academic success,” said Jinho Kim, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at Korea University and author of the study. It was published in the journal School Psychology. “It could also have important health implications in the long run.”Previous research has suggested that teens’ social relationships might be linked to health outcomes in adulthood – perhaps because poor relationships can lead to chronic stress, which can raise…

The study suggests changes in writing style provide clues to group identity

Small changes to people’s writing style can reveal which social group they “belong to” at a given moment, new research showed Groups are central to human identity, and most people are part of multiple groups based on shared interests or characteristics – ranging from local clubs to national identity. When one of these group memberships becomes relevant in a particular situation, behaviour tends to follow the norms of this group so that people behave “appropriately”.The new study – by the University of Exeter, Imperial College London, University College London, and Lancaster University – demonstrated that group normative behaviour is reflected in a person’s writing style. It also showed that assessing writing style can reveal – with an accuracy of about 70 per cent – which of two groups affected a person while they were writing a particular piece of text. To demonstrate their method, researchers studied how people who are parents and feminists change their writing…
